Katembe
Katembe orphanage
Located on the southern shore of Maputo Bay, the Katembe orphanage is home to 20 girls aged 6 to 18. The private center is run by a small team of dedicated caregivers who provide safety and affection, despite very limited resources and little external support. Since 2022, ACA Moz has been developing a vibrant and holistic program in Katembe, combining education, creativity, and emotional well-being.
- Academic reinforcement: tutoring, literacy classes, and study groups to improve academic performance.
- Languages and IT: English lessons and introductory computer classes to build up necessary skills.
- Psychosocial support: group discussions, and workshops on children’s rights, womanhood, and self-confidence.
- Arts and sports: plastic arts, theater, dance, and weekly physical activities that nurture creativity, teamwork, and joy.
- From the age of 15, girls can join the newly established ACA Moz sewing workshop, where they acquire hands-on, professional skills in sewing and embroidery.
- Transition to adulthood: support with university applications, family support, scholarships, professional internships, and mentorship opportunities.
In 2025, ACA Moz expanded its activities with the creation of a sewing workshop and classes, allowing the older girls to learn practical and income-generating skills.
We are now working to equip the orphanage with computers and develop a small IT learning space, so every girl can access digital education and basic computer skills.
Katembe has become a space where learning, creativity, and confidence grow hand in hand, a place where each girl can imagine and prepare her future.
