Chamanculo

Chamanculo orphanage

Located in a lively and densely populated area of Maputo, the Chamanculo orphanage is home to 80 girls aged 6 to 24. Run by two dedicated nuns, the center offers protection and care to girls from highly vulnerable backgrounds, while facing the daily challenges of limited resources and staff.

Since May 2025, ACA Moz has been working closely with the orphanage to strengthen its educational, emotional, and professional support systems. Our goal is to ensure that every girl – whether in school, preparing for exams, or transitioning into adulthood – can access the tools and guidance she needs to build her future with confidence.

Our current activities include:

  • Academic support: tutoring and literacy sessions to help the girls progress at school.
  • Psychological support: regular sessions led by a psychologist to encourage emotional well-being and self-expression.
  • Workshops and discussions: on children’s rights, womanhood, relationships, and personal development.
  • English lessons: to strengthen communication skills and open up future opportunities.
  • Arts and sports: painting, dance, and group activities that nurture creativity, teamwork, and joy.
  • Preparation for adult life: guidance on writing CVs, career orientation, and building confidence for life after the orphanage.

Chamanculo marks an important milestone for ACA Moz.
It is the largest orphanage we support, and its scale has allowed us to adapt and strengthen our approach, from small, community-based centers to a more structured model that combines education, psychological care, and professional preparation.
Chamanculo is not only a place of learning; it is where ACA Moz continues to grow alongside the girls, developing new methods to help them thrive.

In the coming months, ACA Moz plans to expand the program by:

  • Introducing vocational opportunities, university scholarships, internships and mentorship to support a smooth transition into adult life.
  • Equipping the orphanage with computers and launching IT and digital literacy classes.
  • Creating a technical training course to help the oldest girls learn employable skills.
